Riley’s journey from Mill Park’s GOswim lessons to the Australian Swimming Championships

Riley’s swimming journey began at just six months old at Mill Park Leisure. Nearly a decade later, the 10-year-old returned to the same pool, worked his way through every level in just nine months and is now preparing to compete against Australia’s top young swimmers at the Australian Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast in April 2026.

“Riley always loved the water. He was happier under the water than on land. There was never fear,” said mum and Mill Park Leisure GOswim teacher, Donna.

After starting lessons as a baby and continuing until age four, Riley stepped away from lessons before returning at age 10. When he returned, he progressed rapidly, flying through assessments and always striving to be first.

“Riley loved being first in lessons and was often well ahead of the group. That’s when I thought he might enjoy competitive swimming, but I never wanted to push him,” Donna said.

As Riley transitioned into competitive swimming with Ivanhoe Swim Club’s National Age Squad, the challenges intensified. Racing stronger swimmers and adapting to new coaching styles brought moments of self-doubt.

“There were times he questioned whether he was good enough but breaking things into small goals and focusing on one session at a time helped him keep going,” Donna said.

That mindset paid off at the State Long Course Championships, where Riley achieved a national qualifying time for his age group. He has since secured a second national qualifying time and is aiming for a third in the coming weeks.

“Swimming always makes me feel better. I just focus on my own goals and try to improve each time,” Riley said.

Now training seven times a week with Ivanhoe Swim Club’s National Age Squad, Riley’s journey is a reminder that success in sport rarely happens overnight. It begins with early exposure, consistent skill development and a genuine love for the water.

For mum Donna, Riley’s story highlights the long-term value of structured swimming education.

“The GOswim swimming lessons aren’t just about learning strokes. They build water safety, discipline and confidence in and around water that stays with children for life. Whether they go on to compete or simply enjoy the water, those foundations really matter for all children.”
